Small spaces can be challenging to decorate and keep organized so when World Market asked me to create a beautiful yet functional small space, I gladly accepted the challenge because I had the perfect small space in mind!  Our laundry room!

I’m excited to share some before and after images of our laundry room as well as some of my personal small space organization ideas & tips for creating a beautiful, functional, and organized small space!

Our laundry room has always been a catchall…you name it, we have found everything in this room from lost socks, to misplaced toys, important papers, & car keys…the list goes on and on.  Most of what has ended up in our laundry room had no real purpose so those items always ended up on the floor, on the shelves, on top of the washer and dryer, or shoved inside of a cabinet.

Ever since we moved into our home two years ago, this space has never functioned as it should nor was it a room that I was proud of.  We almost always have the door shut to keep the mess contained and out of sight but being that our laundry room is directly across from our half bath, more times than not, our guests mistaken it for the half bath and get a peek into a very messy and disorganized small space.

Even though our laundry room is on the smaller side, we are thrilled to have the space that we do and we do consider ourselves lucky because some laundry rooms are much smaller than ours.  I’m thankful for the space that we had to work with and it was such a fun project to bring my vision for a small space laundry room makeover to life!

When deciding which items I would select from World Market for our laundry room makeover, I first assessed the real challenges that we faced.  The primary challenge that I wanted to overcome was finding a place for everything and no longer having “things” sitting on the floor or on top of the washer & dryer.  Knowing this, I immediately decided that we needed storage items including baskets (and MORE baskets) and some hooks for the wall!

I selected the Charlotte lined wire baskets in all 3 sizes…2 large, 2 medium, and 2 small baskets and I also selected two of the industrial wire racks to hang on each wall.  I love the look of the wire baskets in our laundry room and the wire racks were a nice compliment to give our room a functional and slightly industrial feel.

As you can see, we are now using the baskets to store things like paper towels, toilet paper, and extra towels like these chevron spa bath towels.  Before having these baskets we would shove those items into the cabinets, which left us with little or no space for other things.  Now each of those items have their own designated basket.  Not only are those items easily accessible but they are now organized as well.  The industrial wire racks will help us keep bags, coats, hats, and backpacks off of the floor.  These racks are such nice quality and are very sturdy so they will be able to withstand the weight of several items at once.  We will no longer be tripping over the clutter that was once sitting on our laundry room floor.  With school starting back soon, our kiddos now know to hang their backpacks and jackets on one of these racks.

To keep our space neatly organized and functional, I also picked out two half-gallon glass storage jars, which now hold our laundry pods and our dryer sheets.  I much prefer the look of these great glass jars over having a plastic container of pods and a box of dryer sheets on the shelve.  These jars are perfect for storing items and I love how polished and clean they look in our space.  World Market has so many amazing decorative accessories to help you transform your space.

The Ellie rolling hamper was also an important addition to our laundry room.  Before, we didn’t have a hamper in the laundry to toss dirty clothes into so often times it would pile up on the floor, in the sink, or on top of the washing machine.  Now those dirty clothes easily find their way into this hamper and have made a big difference in us keeping this space nice, neat, and organized.  I also really love the industrial look of this hamper…it really helps tie this space together and is a nice compliment to the wire baskets and the industrial wall racks.

To brighten up our laundry room a bit and to bring it even more personality, I selected this ivory Oliver area rug in a 3X5 and tucked it slightly under our washer and dryer.  We don’t have a lot of floor space in our laundry room but a 3X5 rug was the perfect way to add some visual interest and make this space feel even more polished and cozy.  I’ve got to say, I’m so happy no longer laying a towel on the floor to stand on when using our laundry room!

Some of the final finishes touches included finding some greenery that we already had at home, including a couple of wreaths, to strategically place throughout our laundry room, which definitely helped bring this space to life.

When thinking about redoing any small space of your own, here are a few tips that I would like to share with you!

  1. 1) Know your small space and have a clear understanding of how you wish to utilize your space.  If you understand what the challenges are, you will be able to plan accordingly and overcome those challenges.
  2. 2) Set a budget and look for items at World Market that will allow you to get the most out of the money you will be spending.  For us, it was all about keeping this space organized so our money was spent on storage items, which also helped us solve our biggest challenge in this space!’
  3. 3) Purchase the exact items in different sizes or more than one of an exact item.  This will help create a much more uniform, clean, and organized appearance.
  4. 4) Go with a more neutral color palette and keep things simple.  Neutral colors create the feeling of more space so sticking with a neutral palette is best.   Try not to add too many “things” into your small space to avoid a cluttered appearance.  Keeping it simple will help create the feeling of a larger room as well!
  5. 5) Add your own personal touches!  You want your small space to reflect your own personal style while still being functional and organized!  Have fun with it!!!

My vision for our laundry room came to life and I was able to find exactly what I was looking for at World Market!  I can’t wait to give another small space a makeover…I already have my eye on several World Market pieces.  Visit your local World Market store to see their small spaces collection and to select pieces from their small space storage options…I guarantee they have exactly what you need to transform your own space!

Our laundry room has gone from us always wanting to keep the door closed and hoping our guests don’t mistaken it for the half bath to leaving the door open and proud to show off our small yet beautiful, functional, and organized space!

As always, thanks so much for stopping by…see you back here real soon!
